EXCELLENCE IN ORTHOPAEDICS STARTS WITH EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION
Dr. Jelsma has an outstanding educational background. He graduated summa cum laude and phi beta kappa from Dartmouth College in 1984. At Dartmouth, he won the prestigious Haseltine award given to the most outstanding student in the Chemistry and Physics departments. He then attended medical school at Columbia University in New York. Graduating in the top portion of his medical school class, he was one of the few students invited into Columbia’s orthopedic surgery residency program. Dr. Jelsma spent an additional year in medical research at Columbia studying the basic science of cartilage metabolism. Dr. Jelsma then decided to become a specialist in arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine so he pursued further training. He was offered a prestigious fellowship to train with Dr. James Andrews at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Andrews is widely recognized as the top orthopedic surgeon in sports medicine in the country and is frequently seen on ESPN. Dr. Jelsma also spent time as a doctor covering events for the New York Yankees and New York Knicks during his residency.
Dr. Jelsma has made North Texas home for the last 20 years and brings the world class skills he acquired in his training to this area. He is double board certified in both orthopedic surgery and sports medicine.
HIGH QUALITY SURGERY DEMANDS EXPERIENCE
Dr. Jelsma is one of the most experienced surgeons in North Texas. He has performed:
- Over 3,000 minimally invasive arthroscopic shoulder repairs. These include rotator cuff and labral tears.
- Over 3,000 arthroscopic knee surgeries. These include ACL tears, meniscus tears, and cartilage injuries.
- Over 1,000 minimally invasive knee replacements.
Dr. Jelsma is such an expert at arthroscopic surgery that he teaches advanced arthroscopic techniques to other orthopedic surgeons at American academy of Orthopedic Surgery Training Center in Rosemont, Illinois.
Dr. Jelsma is a member of the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine and the Arthroscopy Association of North America and continues to attending conferences and training sessions throughout the world to stay current on all new developments in his practice area.

Dr. Jelsma knows that the facilities and tools he uses can impact a patient’s experience and outcome.
Dr. Jelsma works tirelessly to improve the medical facilities in the North Texas area. He is one of the founding members of the Heritage Park Surgical Hospital, now known as Baylor, Scott & White Sherman. This hospital is the only area hospital that has received a five star quality rating from the federal government. He helped develop a new Emergency Room serving the South side of Sherman. One of his current projects is developing a medical office building with a musculoskeletal center to serve the North Texas Community.
QUALITY SURGEONS CARE ABOUT THEIR COMMUNITY
Dr. Jelsma started a sports medicine program that serves over 20 local high schools and colleges. Dr. Jelsma not only personally attends football games as a team doctor, but through the sports medicine program helps provide trainers to these schools. Dr. Jelsma is trying to keep our student athletes in the game.
Dr. Jelsma also runs a free Saturday sports clinic in the fall. In this clinic he sees all injured athletes, regardless of their insurance type or ability to pay.
